Works to Trees in a Conservation Area
Rosemary Cottage Clayton Road Newcastle Under Lyme Staffordshire ST5 4AD
Approval is sought to undertake essential management works on two Yew trees (Taxus baccata) located in the rear garden of Rose Cottage. The trees have not been pruned for several years, resulting in dense canopies that dominate the garden, prevent understory growth, and cause structural and access conflicts. All works are proposed, and will be carried out, in accordance with British Standard BS3998. Detailed Schedule of Works & Justification Tree 1 Yew tree,Taxus baccata (Located closest to the rear fence, adjacent to the public footpath) ? Current Condition: This tree is significantly one-sided and exhibits a distinct lean towards the main dwelling. This structural imbalance is caused by heavy shading on its rear side from a neighbouring tree. ? Proposed Work 1: Crown Reduction Specification: Reduce the lateral branches facing the house by 2?3 metres to establish a clear separation zone between the canopy and the building. Justification: The branches are in direct physical contact with the structure, roof tiles, and guttering of Rose Cottage, presenting an immediate risk of structural damage and blocked drainage. ? Proposed Work 2: Crown Lifting Specification: Lift the lower canopy to a uniform height, ensuring a minimum clearance of 2.5 metres over the public footpath. Justification: Low-hanging branches currently overhang the public footpath below a height of 2 metres, creating a direct obstruction and hazard for pedestrians. ? Proposed Work 3: Crown Thinning Specification: Thin the crown by a maximum of 30%. Justification: To reduce wind resistance on an already leaning tree, improve structural balance, and allow light filtration into the rear garden to support ground-level vegetation. Tree 2 Yew tree,Taxus baccata (Located closest to the cottage, adjacent to the patio area) ? Current Condition: A large, dominant specimen positioned next to the domestic patio and the rear elevation of the house. ? Proposed Work 1: Crown Reduction Specification: Reduce the later
