How Thurrock Council takes comments
Online, on the planning portal
Find the application and press the "Submit Comments..." button below the page header. You must register and log in to the planning and licensing records system, which has its own accounts, so your Thurrock 'My Account' login won't work. Open the Thurrock portal.
By email
Thurrock Council gives DevControl@thurrock.gov.uk for when you can't use the portal. Quote the application reference and the site address.
Checked on Thurrock Council's own pages on 27 October 2026: thurrock.gov.uk: Make comment or objection, thurrock.gov.uk: Planning records online, thurrock.gov.uk: Speaking at planning committee meetings. Councils change their process, so check the application's own page for its closing date.

What you can object to
An objection only counts if it is about a material planning consideration. Loss of value, a private view, competition or who the applicant is do not count. Most Thurrock applications are extensions and lofts, dormers and roof extensions, so these are the grounds that come up most here:
Also: overbearing impact, traffic and parking, noise and disturbance, construction disruption, drainage and flooding, trees. Then write it up with the objection letter guide or the template. Numbers alone rarely decide it: see how many objections stop an application.
Get alerted before the comment deadline
The 21-day clock starts when Thurrock Council notifies neighbours or puts up the site notice, not when you happen to notice the scaffolding. PlanWatch reads the Thurrock register regularly and adds new applications as they appear. Search your postcode free, save it to a free account, and on a paid plan get an email within hours of a new application near you reaching the register, while there is still time to comment.

Build my objection letterObjecting in Thurrock: questions
How long do I have to object to a planning application in Thurrock?
Thurrock Council does not publish a single comment period on its website; the date is on the neighbour letter, site notice and the application's page on the portal. On late comments: "We will use our discretion and take into account any comments received up until we prepare our recommendation report."
Can I object to a Thurrock planning application by email?
Use the portal first. Thurrock Council gives DevControl@thurrock.gov.uk for when you can't comment online. Quote the application reference and the site address.
Will Thurrock Council publish my objection?
Yes. Comments are "a matter of public record", and your name and address are shown on the website and can be inspected at the Civic Offices in Grays. The council may hide comments it considers inflammatory.
Can I speak at the Thurrock planning committee?
Yes. Email your request to speak and a written statement to direct.democracy@thurrock.gov.uk by midday at least 2 working days before the meeting, not counting the meeting day. You get 3 minutes; usually only a ward councillor and one other person speak for or against an item, and a ballot decides between several objectors.
